The most prosperous period of Xiluo Street was during the Japanese Occupation time that was around in the first half of the 20th century.    There are endless streams of tourists and businesses. the lively Xiluo Street which was next to the ferry pier is (now Yanping Old Street).   At that time, the shops along the street and the East Market were mostly trading places for different kinds of goods from everywhere.   There were many hotels and tea shops nearby and are always very busy and crowded.

However, after the great earthquake at central Taiwan in 1935, Xiluo was severely damaged.   According to the records, many houses were destroyed at that time, and there were devastated walls everywhere.    Therefore, Xiluo Street was launched the "Urban Correction Project" in Showa 12 (1937) and actively rebuilt the street profile. The current appearance of Xiluo Old Street was mostly established at that time. The 142 Xiluo historical street houses seen so far were built during the Japanese Occupation period and have survived till today. Their style was influenced by the prevailing global decoration style and modernist architectural style at that time. Japanese architects loved this modern trend and had designed many public offices and commercial facilities in Taiwan, such as the Taipei Chenma Chamber of Commerce (near the Commercial Press), Taichung Entertainment Center, Xiluo Water Conservancy Association and other buildings, thus driving Taiwan architect to learn and merge some of the traditional architectural styles into a special architectural style with a sense of the century and the local flavor. It happened to be the transition period for Taiwanese architecture from traditional to modern.

The East Market at the end of the street was close to the ferry pier of Xiluo River during the Qing Dynasty, and business travelers from everywhere gathered here and became an important trading place.   During the Showa period, the district was rebuilt.  The front building of the East Market was built into a "mountain-shaped" bamboo house, which was divided into a shophouse facing the street, and store and vegetable & meat stalls in the back. The inside construction was similar to the Archway house" of Tokyo, Japan.    After the completion of the Xiluo Bridge in 1953, the Xiluo Town Office re-used the removed wood from the Xiluo Bridge to refurbish the roof girders of the East Market, so it is equivalent to an accessory of the Xiluo Bridge.   Later, it was classified as a dangerous building due to disrepair.  In 1998, the Luoyang Culture and Education Foundation looked for various resources to rebuilt in 2009.  The front building is mainly for reinforcement and restoration, while the rear is transformed and revitalized.  In addition to replacing some of the beams and columns, it also maintains the characteristics of pavilion feet and wooden mezzanine. It developed towards the "cultural and creative market", are used to drive the development of Yanping Old Street.
