Xiluo Town is on the south bank of the longest Zhuoshui River in Taiwan. The soil along with the Zuousui River is rich in fertility to produce rice with a tender and chewy texture, naturally releasing a pleasant aroma. Xiluo became so famous for the excellent quality of the rice that it even got granted as one of the Japanese Imperial Appointment merchandise during the Japanese period. Therefore, rice production became a trend in Xiluo. There were more than sixty rice milling factories in its heyday.

西螺鎮位於台灣第一大溪流濁水溪中游南岸,濁水溪沿岸土壤肥沃,西螺所生產的稻米香且Q。在日治時代,連日本天皇都指定要吃台灣的西螺米,可見其受喜愛的程度。日治時期,西螺因盛產稻米,碾米加工廠有六十幾家之多,西螺米因而盛名遠傳。

There are a variety of rice products in Xiluo. One of them is the scallion rice cake located on Jianxing Rd. Having Xiao’s scallion rice cake for breakfast banishes the townspeople´s morning fatigue and starts their day with the energy they need. For over sixty years, the Xiao family carried the tradition of making Kueh(粿). First, they preserve the enriched extra-long grain rice in barn storage for a year. Second, they soak rice for a specific time, grind it into thick rice pulp, and then the final step is to steam the rice pulp layer by layer with white and brown color. It also takes three hours per day to produce the exclusive Xiao family sauce that mixes rice and peanut milk with Xiluo soybean sauce, which has the ultimate heavenly taste. Its process is quite time-consuming, but soft fire makes sweet malt. (慢工出細活) This cake is worth a try. 

西螺也發展出各式各樣的米製品,其中位於建興路上的「蕭家油蔥粿」更是西螺人一早活力來源,傳承一甲子的蕭家油蔥粿使用放置一年的西螺在來米浸泡磨成米漿,一層一層的蒸製,中間再使用自行調製的米漿加入西螺甘醇醬油調色,每天要耗時三小時才能完成,相當費工。

Once you dip the cake into some Xiao’s family flavor source, you won’t miss the soul of the dip, the crispy fried shallot. It brings out a whole lingering, memorable pleasant taste.
